The Heart Shaped Lake

This story starts with a melt lake in the ice and ends with a pool in the silt left by a retreated glacier, both lakes are heart shaped. Perfect bookends for an Arctic love story perhaps, but the reality is less romantic since most of the glaciers depicted are receding. The full story starts high on the interior of Greenland where the mass of snow accumulates and passes through the glaciers that carry ice towards the sea. It ends with melt water running off the glacier’s edge and with solid ice calving into the ocean; a rate of calving more rapid than we have known in recent times.
