On the Solid Sea
The scientists gathered on the floe like doctors with a patient; it was becoming clear that the sea ice was not well. Pacing the ice surface, they made measurements, took samples and studied temperature readings. They looked concerned, their patient was not in good health. During the month that these photographs were made, sea ice coverage of the Arctic Ocean in Summer shrunk to the second lowest extent since satellite records began. The ice doctors returned home with bad news.
