Finger rafting in sea ice

Where the Ice Goes to Die

Sea ice waxes and wanes with the seasons, this is most apparent at the margins where it meets open ocean. These images are flights over the birth and death of Arctic sea ice. They show the decay of older ice broken down by the ocean currents and the summer heat, followed by the calm of new ice forming as temperatures fall in the Autumn. This is the story of the Fram Strait, the place where the ice goes to die.
