The job of an expedition guide in Antarctica is complex:
how to let your guests experience the true wonders of the
environment while minimising their impact on it?
Antarctica is one of the most safeguarded environments in the
world, flourishing because it is protected by an international
treaty. Expedition guides work to very specific guidelines
so that visitors can experience wildlife without damaging
the ecosystem. There is a dance between allowing visitors
to experience nature so closely that they become inspired to
cherish it further but with enough distance for it to remain
undisturbed. The title comes from a word used by the group of
guides I worked with, a playful slang term for wildlife
or ‘other interesting things’ on route which they worked hard
to share with their guests.
