Old coal train at Ny-Ålesund

Radio silence

One of the requirements of ships approaching the
remote research facility of Ny Ålesund is that they
turn off certain radio frequencies.
This is because the high Arctic community hosts a radio
telescope, which takes advantage of the lack of background
noise to conduct experiments. Likewise the relative lack of pollution
in the air allows for specialised monitoring of gases in the atmosphere that would not be possible further south.
Scientists from all over the world are eager for the opportunity to conduct research at high latitudes.
