The Brown Coal of Konin

Poland currently relies on coal for some ninety percent of its electricity production, much of it is mined and burned in the Konin valley. The area produces lignite or ‘brown coal’ a type even more polluting than the standard variety. Walking through the open pits of Poland’s heartland takes us headlong into the world’s energy problem -how to wean ourselves off of fuels like coal and use less polluting means of electricity generation.
