The Wood for the Trees
When the protesters stood firm as the bulldozers approached,
battalions of men in yellow jackets were dispatched into the
fields and forests. This was how the Third Battle of Newbury
began, as a young photographer it was my first real story.
I can still hear the chainsaws ringing across the valley,
louder than the traffic that now piles up slowly on the
tarmac A34 trunk road. That tarmac was poured
over the landscape of these pictures.
