Gerwain on trampoline at Kingshill

Treading Lightly

This story is dedicated to the memory of Brian Monger
who famously built the biggest ‘bender’ in Somerset.
A bender is a traditional low impact home made from hazel
branches covered with canvas. While some might regard this
as naive and low-tech, I watched Brian and his wife Christine
raise their two children comfortably in theirs. Their children had
a different experience of the landscape than many of their
contemporaries, able to roam from their doorstep in a green
space free of cars. Brian, wary of being considered a radical,
put it simply: “I don’t want to change the world, I just want
to live in a fucking bender”.
